Mason College of Engineering and Computing faculty are gaining insight into how our bodies handle joint pain after an injury.

Siddhartha Sikdar and several colleagues from CASBBI received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) initiative to study chronic myofascial pain. The team will first develop biomarkers to study the association between muscle tissue abnormality and pain, and then conduct clinical trials to test two different interventions.

A study led by bioengineering professor Giorgio Ascoli has received $250,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. The project will make use of a massive open-source repository called Hippocampome maintained by Ascoli’s lab.

Students like Sosale encapsulate Mason’s spirit of innovative and engaging undergraduate scholarship. Next year, the Goldwater Scholarship, which provides up to $7,500 as a stipend to its recipients will allow Sosale to continue her research, and help propel her academic career forward.

The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has announced the election of Giorgio Ascoli, University Professor, in the Department of Bioengineering at George Mason University to its College of Fellows. Ascoli was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the AIMBE College of Fellows for outstanding contributions in the development of open-access resources for data science in the investigation of learning, memory, and neurodegeneration.

The Katona Scholarship for Excellence in Bioengineering began in 2015, and is awarded to bioengineering seniors at Mason who show excellence across their academic performance, leadership initiatives, and career aspirations that aim to support society at large.

Medhini Sosale knows that a combination of field and lab work is what she wants to do for her career, and her time at Mason has given her endless opportunities to explore it further.

Bioengineers find solutions to some of the world’s grand problems. But sometimes, it takes collaboration with scientists to find out the questions that need to be answered to properly apply and maximize these engineering solutions.
