Giorgio Ascoli, University Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, will receive the Beck Family Medal at the Faculty Awards Reception on May 11 at 4:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Lobby. The Beck Family Medal is presented to faculty members whose contributions represent groundbreaking advances in their fields.

Carol McHugh, the academic program assistant for Mason’s Bioengineering Department, is March Employee of the Month.

The George Mason University team behind NeuroMorpho.org has been honored for its work by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and the Office of Data Science Strategy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Mason researchers Jeffrey Moran in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Rémi Veneziano in the Department of Bioengineering, and Monique van Hoek, a microbiologist in the School of Systems Biology, won the NBIB R21 Trailblazer award. The team will research methods to dissolve harmful biofilms.

With the support of her Mason mentors, doctoral student Shrishti Singh has achieved her goal of developing a promising new technology that would allow cancer to be visualized in deep tissue and perhaps diagnosed earlier.

Siddhartha Sikdar and several colleagues from CASBBI received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) initiative to study chronic myofascial pain. The team will first develop biomarkers to study the association between muscle tissue abnormality and pain, and then conduct clinical trials to test two different interventions.

A study led by bioengineering professor Giorgio Ascoli has received $250,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. The project will make use of a massive open-source repository called Hippocampome maintained by Ascoli’s lab.
